Cloud Twister

October, 2006

42" x 95" x 50"

Hammered Steel, Cast Porcelain

I've always loved the stylized clouds depicted in Chinese paintings, especially the clouds that surround Buddhist Deities. They have a serenity and uniformity that appeals to my sense of order. In this piece, I wanted to line up a whole bunch of them and spin them in a large vortex like a tornado. They all spin around, following each other downward to the ground, bringing the heavens down to the earth. Or conversely, all my lovely little thoughts come crashing to the ground. Either way works for me!

The clouds themselves are cast in the whitest, most translucent porcelain I could find. They each allow light to pass through making the interior of each cloud glow a nice creamy yellow color.

The frame is constructed of hammered steel rod to give it a rougher somewhat rickety appearance. The steel is chemically treated to oxidize it to a gun-blue/black and then coated with a heavy layer of black translucent wax. this gives it a really clean satiny burnished look that I love.
